Lies half was between Seoul and Suwon, the population of Gunpo City has been increased rapidly. It has taken the advantage of the development in the Metropolitan area as it shares the same living sphere as Seoul, including transportation and residential functions. Based on such characteristics, the change in its social and economic structures has provided the rapid growth, and also there is a high development potential as a major residential and industrial city. Especially, it was equipped with aspects as a city along with the completion of the large-scale development project for residential land at the Sanbon District. Gunpo continues a trend of rapid expansion in every field of city administration as a nucleus city in the Metropolitan area.
Land and Climate
With a land area of 36.38 ㎢, Gunpo City is located in the central part of the Korean Peninsula at 126° east longitude and 37° north latitude. Although the city is influenced by the continental weather, it takes on the features of an oceanic climate due to the short distance to the cost. Its average temperatures in January and August are -3.2℃ and 26℃, respectively. Its annual precipitation is 1,284mm.
Growth and Transition of Gunpo City
Due to various negative issues caused by rapid urbanization and high industrial growth, the central government preceded the construction of new five cities near Seoul : Gunpo, Seongnam, Anyang , Bucheon and Goyang. According to the Notification No. 70 of the Ministry of Construction, Gunpo City was able to establish a large-scale housing complex zone, an area of 4,225,000m 2 by designating the entire area of Sanbon-dong, Geumjeong-dong, Dang-dong as an anticipated residential land district in February 1989. Even though the city maintained the smallest area in the entire country with 20.70 ㎢ at the beginning of its promotion to a city, its area expanded greatly from 15.68 ㎢ to 36.38 ㎢ with the incorporation of Daeyami-ri, Sokdal-ri, Domagyo-ri and Dundae-ri of Banwol-myeon, Hwaseong-gun as those areas were brought into Gunpo City on December 24, 1994. Furthermore, with the development and completion of Sanbon New Town in January 1995, it grew as a nucleus city in the Metropolitan area with a population of 270,000
